A lot of us may have an ‘attitude of gratitude’ to the higher forces or to whatever or whoever we hold to be sacred to us, on a special occasion or when things go our way.
The biological, psychological and spiritual benefits of gratitude are many. Consciously cultivating a feeling of gratitude is much like a skill – one that we can gain much from.
What is an Attitude of Gratitude ?
For me – Gratitude is about feeling and expressing a sense of appreciation for all that I have received. And also for that I may NOT have received. It helps me create a sense of balance. By helping me deal with what I may want but do not have and what I have but do not want. Hence – the feeling that comes with Gratitude is the opposite of being discontented. And it’s one of the most beautiful states to be in.
As we are all part of a Supreme Being – expressing a sense of gratitude to anyone for anything – is an expression of gratitude to that supreme power. Circumstances that are challenging also have plenty of learnings and blessings within them. It’s only with passage of time – can we look back and be truly grateful for what they enabled us to achieve.
Benefits of Expressing Gratitude
Research tells us about the benefits that come with gratitude. Including physical health and a general sense of well-being. The ability to get a great night’s sleep. Strengthening of relationships. And the ability to look at even the most challenging of situations as an opportunity to transform one’s life for the better. A person with a sense of gratitude is also one who is generous, mindful and compassionate. And is able to evoke similar feelings in others. And because one carries gratitude within – one manifests a similar state of positivity and abundance in one’s environment.
So how, when, where and to whom do I show gratitude ? To begin with – I like to express gratitude to the Universe. For the air I breathe and the life I am blessed to have. And for my ability to lead a meaningful life at home and at work.
I also use the following methods to sustain my feeling of gratitude on an ongoing basis
Ways to Express Gratitude
- Every morning I offer gratitude to the Universe and to myself for being able to live another meaningful day
- I write a gratitude journal – everyday. I write down three things I am grateful for at the end of each day. It is extremely inspiring to read words of gratitude some six months down the line.
- I express gratitude to the ones who matter the most to me. Frequently.
- I also acknowledge other people and thank them for inspiring/helping/supporting me
- And I offer gratitude to myself for what I have achieved and not achieved.
Every day may not be perfect, but focusing on what I am grateful for – ensures that I am able to do away with feelings of anger and negativity and to have a positive outlook on my life. I would strongly recommend adopting some of my suggested methods that will help you to develop an overall grateful mindset. It takes a bit of effort, but having an attitude of gratitude is one of the most important and impactful habits for a fulfilling and healthy life.
